Art in The Bottle. Fattoria Nittardi wines
Abe and Joanna met Stefania Canali in Ascot just over a week ago. She and her husband Peter not only the owners of the Nittardi vineyards but they also own an art gallery in Frankfurt. At the same time Peter was preparing his stand at the World Fine Art Fair in Moscow.
Stefania had some of the Nittardi wines with her so we arranged a quick lunch at Ciao 90 in Ascot and we were joined by the owner and some of the staff of Ciao 90 to taste these delicious wines. [more info…]
A message in a bottle, lost at sea
This special Champagne will be 100 years old in 2007!
During World War One, November 3, 1916, off the coast of Finland, a German submarine sunk the Swedish ketch: Jonkoping. The cargo sank while on its way to St Petersburg, with on board special shipment of 1,000 gallons of Cognac, 17 barrels of Burgundy Wine, 3000 bottles of Heidsieck & Co Monopole 1907 "Gout Americain" dedicated to the Russian Imperial Army. Unfortunately, the Cognac and the barrels of Burgundy wine did not survive the 82 years spent in the sea, but 2500 bottles of Heidsieck & Co Monopole champagne were extraordinarily preserved. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION
Burnished copper/rusty orange color; impeccable purity. Fine scents of white chocolate, marshmallow, dried apricot, and tropical fruit rule the early inhalations; additional air contact stirs up added aromas of English toffee, butter cream, chocolate covered orange rind, marmalade, and the beginnings of rancio; could easily and happily smell this classic all day. Palate entry is vibrant, woody/resiny, dry to bittersweet, beany, and moderately oily; midpalate is long, lush, and deep, with a taste finale that includes flavors of caramel, treacle, prunes, and very old sherry. Ends elegantly yet forcefully. A gem whose character never fades. [more info...]
